My new hair!
After searching high and low, browsing many you tube channels, and scouring the net for ideas I finally got my summer do. This new style is inspired by AFRICANEXPORT (AE). A couple of months ago I ran across her channel and fell in love. She sported crochet braids as a protective style for her natural tresses. Also, she was so nice to answer my questions I had about the braids. This sister keeps it real so check her out.
Now, my first reaction when I looked in the mirror was “Whoa that’s a lot of hair!” Immediately, I told my stylist to take a lot of the bulk out. When I see sistas sporting the “big hair” it is so beautiful but to see big hair on me was very different. Of course, I complained to Jeremy and I was contemplating taking the hair out. He listened to me complain about my hair for at least 20 minutes. Honestly, I was worried about what others will think and the attention my hair will attract. At times, I am shy and very, very reserved but those who know me may disagree. When he seen me he said “you are beautiful” and instantly my self doubts started to melt away. He loved the fullness, the volume, and my curls. He is so great!!
Still a little apprehensive about my new style I went to you tube and check out AE’s video on cutting the braids. Off to the bathroom for styling I went and praying for a miracle. The next morning…I fell in love with my hair. Having big hair is totally different and definitely falls outside of “normal” for me. Despite earlier doubts, I felt fierce at work. Co-workers and my boss all love the curly look on me.

For this style I used Freetress Bulk Water Wave and Presto Curl. The hair was so pretty from first glance while in the package. The pictures do no justice and I knew this hair was perfect for this style. As mentioned before, I’m not hair style savvy so I paid $50 for the braids. I love my braid stylist because she does a wonderful job. She has never complained to me when I’ve asked her to take down and re-braid when I felt too much tension. Yes, I politely ask her to take down a braid and re-do it because it’s my hair and I want my edges. I’m lucky to know her and she’s the only person I trust to braid my hair.
The main reason for this style is to get a preview of what’s to come once I’m fully natural. Choosing the crochet braids as a protective style was a good decision and I have no regrets.

So…I chickened out!
I chickened out of getting the kinky twists and corn rolls and decided on a lace front. Ateyaaa is my inspiration behind the wig. She is a hair and makeup guru you can easily find on YouTube. After seeing her with the “Tia” wig I had to buy it because it reminded me so much of my sew in.
As far as reactions, everyone seems to love the wig on me which is an added bonus. Day two of wearing the wig it felt tight around the edges. So to ease any tension I simply readjusted when needed. Just in case you are wondering, I did not use glue or tape. This wig has three combs and an adjustable strap that holds the wig in place perfectly. Now after many uses I may need to use glue at the top of my hairline because the wig may gap. If that happens then oh well because I do not plan to use the glue or tape along my edges. Without the glue, the wig has a snug fit so I can’t imagine adding glue to my hairline which can lead to breakage.
This wig is a full lace which means, my understanding, that I can wear it up in a high ponytail. So far I have yet to try a ponytail but honestly not interested. Right now I love the “wrapped” look; plus its cold outside so the wig also serves as my hat. HA! Seriously, this wig has been my protective style for the last three weeks. The convenience is lovely because I get up in the morning pop it on brush down and go. Also, on my cardio days at the gym I simply take it off and put on my scarf.
I am in love with the lace front wig! I love the color, the softness of the hair, length, and the semi natural look. The reason I say semi natural because my fellow afro American brothers and sisters knows this a lace front at first glance. However, my Caucasian brothers and sisters believe this wig is my natural hair. One way or the other, this is not a big deal for me because I’m not pretending this is my hair. For next four to six weeks I plan to wear this lace as a protective style. In a future post I will talk about the maintenance for my hair.

As far as the corn rolls, I planned to wait until the summer to rock them. Here in Texas the heat is blazing during the summer months. During the summer I prefer not to have hair on my neck. Right now I’m scouting some different yet professional styles with corn rolls to switch up from my norm.

The take down...
The day finally came to take down my hair. The take down happened during the weekend of Thanksgiving because I just couldn’t stand another day in my weave. I enjoyed it while it lasted but I was missing my hair terribly.
1. Once the braids are out: saturated my hair with Rose water and glycerin
2. Detangle
3. Add ORS Hair Mayonnaise from root to tip – protein treatment
4. Plat into several braids
5. Sit under the dryer 30 minutes for protein treatment
6. Shampoo scalp only with clarifying shampoo
7. Shampoo hair with ORS Shampoo
8. D/C with heat 30 minutes – ORS Replenishing Conditioner
9. Leave ins – Neutrogena Triple Moisture, Aphogee Keratin Spray, and Proclaim 7 Oil to seal Coconut Oil
10. Plat hair in twists to air dry over night or pony tails using ouch less holders
11. Coconut oil – heat protectant
12. Flat iron
13. Trim
My results were amazing and I’m quite pleased. It seems the MTG Sulu Growth (MTG) was a success! The take down process was very, very simple. Detangling was a breeze to my surprise. I’m assuming because my hair was moisturized from oiling my scalp every week with the MTG. The end result was very soft manageable hair. I used the coconut oil for the first time as my heat protectant which made my hair silky smooth. The coconut oil is definitely a staple product and I prefer it over the EVOO. Since I flat ironed my hair, now until next wash day I will moisturize twice a day and wear pin ups.
APL? Maybe? Hopefully by the New Year!
